The Municipal Library in Karlovo provided the premises for the eye examinations
Leading ophthalmologists at the University Hospital "Alexandrovska" performed free eye examinations of more than 200 children under the age of 10 in the Municipal Library in Karlovo. The examinations are part of the University Hospital’s project "Do good - free eye examinations for children up to the age of 10". 12 394 Levs were raised to support the project within the fifth donation campaign of Raiffeisenbank "Choose to Help" 2013. The Library, which is a kind host of the charitatble initiative of the ophthalmologists, is also a beneficiary of Raiffeisenbank’s donation campaign with its project “Bring back the children in the library”.
So far, the team of eye specialists from "Aleksandrovska" Hospital and the students from the Medical University - Sofia have examined more than 4,000 children, mostly from northwestern Bulgaria, with the purpose of early detection and prevention of eye diseases. Glasses were donated to 414 children. For over 90% of the children (3 786 children) this was the first consultation with an eye specialist. All patients, who have had additional treatment have it continued in the eye clinic of the University Hospital "Alexandrovska".
Last year’s autumn, the initiative covered refugee camps in Sofia and Kovachevtsi village. The team of doctors and volunteers examined over 1,000 children, each child received a package of goodies, and medicines were donated to all children in need.
The Library in Karlovo traditionally supports various initiatives and exhibits social responsibility towards its youngest visitors, who in order to be able to read must have good eyesight. The utilization of the 3113 levs donated by the bank and its employees is forthcoming. With this donation the Library will update the children’s section of the library, so that the kids have access to the latest children’s books.
